Hey, greetings from western Canada all! I'll be in Wroclaw for the ole celta come fall and am looking forward to it. So far, in my job hunt over the 'net', I've only gotten offers in China and one that I was turned down for in Russia. Not looking good for this non-EU'er in Europe where I'd prefer to teach English (and music). Wondering if anyone out there knows of places in Poland that are open to North Americans with no BA degree but teaching experience and the celta, working for them?
Just a "stab in the dark". I know my options are limited in Poland or other EU countries.
All the best to everyone out there. timbits |

Well IH is one name that springs to mind! It really depends when you finish the CELTA course. If you are in Poland at the beginning of september, have a CELTA and some experience, just go round the private laguage schools in the city you want to work in and you will most probably get a few job offers. Try the same thing in November and you'll be lucky to get a single offer. It is so seasonal!
Good luck and don't worry about it too much. IH Wroclaw have got a pretty good reputation for both the training they povide and the job finding assistance they offer.
The only problem with finding work in Poland is that you will have to go back to Canada as part of the work permit/visa process. If you can get a job offer before you go then you can get the paperwork done in Canada so no need for a trip back home after the CELTA. But you are less likely to be recruited from overseas, especially if you lack qualifications.
I did see that IH Wroclaw are looking for teachers and they do not appear to require a BA. The jobs are in Bielsko-Biala and Opole. Opole is the slightly bigger city but B-B has the nicer location. There are also jobs in Katowice but Katowice is a pretty ugly place and rather polluted too. Why not email IH Wroclaw and ask them about working for them after you finish the CELTA? |

I totally agree with Alex about the visa requirements (the necessity of going back to Canada, etc). It's a shame, but it's been like this since December 97. What can you do?
Also, it's a great idea to contact the IH's in Poland about a job. If you are already signed up for a CELTA with them, then I don't think there should be any problems.
Anyway, can't write much as I'm on holiday in the Baltics right now.
Good luck! Poland is a great place.. |
