Hi, I'm considering taking a TESOL certification course and was looking for some advice. I'm not quite sure that I want to teach abroad so my plan was to do the course then come back home to DC to work for a while. I was wondering what job opportunities might exist in the Washington, DC, area when I return. The two TESOL courses I'm considering are a CELTA course in Madrid and an SIT TESOL course in Costa Rica. I wanted to take the course in a Spanish speaking country to supplement my teacher training with some practice in Spanish. Thanks. |

In D.C. try Lado College and Inlingua. Lado has three branches, all of which pay poorly. I'm guessing that you are independently wealthy like most of us ESL'ers, so money is no concern.
Arlington, VA seems to be a good place to hang your hat. There is a Lado there, near the Metro, and Inlingua is down the hill. Both are on Wilson Boulevard. Arlington County has an ESL program that they run that pays around $20 an hour; I think you can find info about it through the Arlington County Public Schools website.
Also in D.C. there seem to be 3 or 4 small places, concentrated in the Georgetown or Northwest area. I just got out the phone book and did some online searches, that is how I found my gig. I also did well with some private lessons I taught on the side, but I had to arrange backdoor deals with students in my schools to get these. Whatever pays the bills, yeah?
Good luck to you! |
