What's the cost of living like in Tripoli? Could you give a comparable city elsewhere to give me an idea?

Tripoli is incomparable Wink

Provided you had your accommodation and utilities paid for, a local budget (in addition to the large salary you should be receiving) of 300 LD a month would be enough if all you wanted to do was eat occasionally, and possibly lose weight. I really do mean 'all you wanted to do'.
500 LD would be equivalent if you're a smoker.
800LD is ok if you think that you want to eat well (healthily, if not blandly) and buy some essential clothes, DVDs and do a tiny bit of travelling.

If you want a few 'western' comforts then you'll probably need to head to Regatta - a members only compound style place. But that is way beyond the budgets listed above. Assuming you are being paid a fair whack (and having experienced it I can see little other reason) you may not be able to save that much and have any kind of lifestyle that would keep you sane.

Spending your free time in internet cafes and staring at BBC world/CNN on your days off because there is nothing else to do is no way to live.

Taxis cost about 3 to 5 LD in and around town.
Minivans/shared taxis are 1/4 LD upwards.

A selection of items that you will soon be sick of the sight of,

1 litre of milk is 1LD.
A can of pepsi is 1/2 LD.
Chicken sandwiches are about 3/4 LD upward.
A small tin of tuna is 1LD.
Bread is unbelievably cheap.
CDs range from about 3LD to 10LD.

There are a few threads on this topic already. Have a look at this one

Working there means being paid a lot of money.

Who are you thinking of working for?
