I apologize in advance if I'm asking too many newbie-type questions and haven't researched this enough yet. Here's my story: American; college degree; I've studied Chinese and travelled extensively in western China, by the end of my travels a few years ago my Chinese was good..I could carry on a conversation pretty well and could email what I was able to speak; I recognized 1500 characters or so. I'd like to live in China for a few years at least, preferably in Shanghai. I would eventually like to find a job in tourism, financial services, or business of some type, but I was thinking about teaching English for a full year or a half year while I improve my Chinese to the point of fluency. I am committed to teaching and teaching well--I don't want to just "use" it as a chance to be in China. I was thinking of arriving in Shanghai in December or January. A few questions, which you can answer directly or direct me to the proper book/magazine/website where I can have my questions answered:
1. Is it at all feasible to show up in Shanghai, tutor English on the side or find a short-term teaching job to support myself until I find a full-time, contract job? Or should I definitely secure a job before arriving?
2. What certification do I need and where is the best place to obtain it?
3. Is there any problem showing up on a tourist visa and then converting to a work visa & residence permit?
Any other useful tips or advice is appreciated. Let me know if there are any other details you need. Thanks in advance. |

Consider the fact that you'd have to extend your tourist visa every 60 days or so, and you should definitely have a job secured before going to Shanghai.

I just read that after I posted. I think I can obtain a 6-month, double-entry visa from the consulate here, so maybe that would be an option. |

I just realized even a 6-month visa has to be renewed often. |
