Elan,
Youve received alot of EXCELLENT advice from well-informed people (with GOOD intention!!!).
May I add my two cents worth.
Like you, I stemmed from the corporate sector (banking and finance) and possessed an interest in teaching. I pursued a Cert TESOL and MA (Applied Linguistics); during which time I also taught at the university.
Like you, I debated about leaving the comfort of a six-figure profession for a position thats paying NOWHERE as near as what I was earning on a monthly basis. In fact, the amount I was forced to spend on a monthly basis (taking clients out to lunches, buying gifts etc) was substantially more than the amount I will receive on a six monthly basis in my teaching position in a foreign country.
Like you, Im of Asian extraction (Chinese / Australian) and spent some time wondering how I would be perceived.
Like you, sometimes I wonder if its worth it..
I made the decision six months ago to leave my job and pursued my interest in travel and teachingit was the best decision I have ever made in my entire life.better than any mergers and acquisitions deal Ive ever put together (hope my former boss is not reading thisthey still owe me my yearly bonus!!!)
All cultural and social landscapes have its ugliness.but thats the beauty of it!!!!
Have you considered teaching English to IT students / professionals in a Russian university or perhaps, other parts of Europe? They would be delighted to have your expertise and knowledge.
As soon as they discover your IT background, you will be swamped with job offers (Ive removed banking and finance from my CV because I was inundated with job offers to teach Business English).
My advice is very simple.JUST GO FOR IT MATE!!!! Dont think about it too much.
Enjoy the ride. You wont regret it.
All the very best,
Joel
PS By the way, if you discover a good place to learn Mandarin in Russia, please share it with Deicide |
