Hey,
I've just got my Celta but I don't have any teaching experience. I have some questions.
Is Singapore a good place for first time teachers?
Is it possible to get a job here with no experience?
How does it compare to other Asian countries in terms of quality of life?
Thanks. |

I see very few ESL jobs in Singapore. I suspect that English is already widely spoken there, and as such, you won't have much chance of finding a decent position there without being a fully qualified teacher, to teach in, say, an international school. |

In terms of lifestyle, Singapore is a wonderful place. you will have a super time there, and your one year will most probably turn into two.
There are loads of language schools about and with a CELTA and a degree, you'll have no problems. PM me if you want me to pass on the details of one which is hiring and is fairly good.
As the previous poster said, you'll have to work hard. Expect to keep office hours of 8-5 or 9-6 and teach a load of around 27-30 hours a week. This a lot compared to other Asian countries. Schools rarely provide benefits such as housing or airfares, unlike many other countries, so your chances of saving a lot are minimised. However, saving around US$500 a month should not be too challenging.
As a new teacher, it is not the best place to get started. The classes are often large and you will need to know your stuff and have good management abilitites.
The location is second to none, with easy links and budget airlines providing access to Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand for long weekends and holidays. |
