Basically, if you're in a bar or sitting at home - you'll be fine. If you're on the street and seeking attention, probably not so wise. But then, alcohol in public places is frowned upon (and against the law) in most western nations also. |

Your main inquiry, with regard to working and living in Indonesia, concerns the possibility of running around wearing shorts and tank top while drinking beer in public!
Here in Jakarta, you can go to a warung and buy beer and viagra, then go to a club and top it off with a handfull of pills and a bedfull of women - you may even get away with wearing your tank top.
Welcome to Indonesia. |
No, no, ghost is not like the picture you paint above!
You have to take those things in isolation, and not put them together to get a better picture of the original question.....
Ghost likes to go jogging 3-4 times a week.....and in a tropical climate, like Indonesia, simply wondered whether it was ok to do so in flimsy running attire (shorts and tank tops) without offending the local populace.
With regard to beer consuming, ghost is no alcoholic, by any stretch, but simply wondered how easy it was to buy and drink beer, but not in public, but rather in the privacy of the ghost abode.....
In any event, from the answers on display, one gathers that one can do both in most locales in Indonesia, but to be cautious in conservative Muslim areas where western culture is less prevalent.

From an Indonesian perspective, your tank top will likely draw less attention than the fact your crazy enough to suck in diesel fumes amongst wild traffic in the heat of the tropics. |

Most people that exercise in Indonesia do so in gymnasiums. In Surabaya, you'd likely be doing more damage to your health than good by jogging outside. |

That is bad news indeed....about the pollution, and ghost encountered a similar problem in Manila (Philippines) and many other towns/cities in the Philippines....but still managed to find jogging routes almost everywhere...and in Manila, found many Filipinos jogging at around 5-6am on the long boulevard going from Pasay city to the U.S. Embassy compound......and ghost was always welcomed to join in with the Pinoys/Pinoys who ran in the early mornings.....
In the Philippines.....the Filipinos would always shout out "Hey Joe, do you want to run with us, do you want to play some basketball?" - very welcoming to foreigners.....in Asia the most friendly...one suspects that the welcome would not be so friendly in Indonesia, because of the culture, and possible language barrier....
It seems, that Indonesia is even more polluted than the Philippines....but are there locations on the main Island (Java) where jogging and mountain biking are feasible?

I, like you ghost, also spent some time in the Philippines and found it remarkably similar to Indonesia. Pollution levels in Manila and Jakarta are high and forest fires seem common thruout Java and Luzon. The 'Hey Joe' cry is replaced by 'Hello Mister' but both countries are pretty friendly. Maybe Filipinos are more outgoing because their English is of a higher standard.
Interestingly, the people in Jakarta who seem to hassle me for a beer when I walk home with a bag of 10 are usually muslims-ironic indeed! |

Ghost,
If I've ever seen a bunch of fit Indonesians hitting the mountain bikes / jogging hard, it was in the Bandung region. This is a slightly cooler city set in the mountains south of Jakarta with a population of 3 million+. If you are after something a bit natural with a fitness crowd, quite pleasant and not super far from the capital (bout 2 hours by car) this would be the place to live. You can get jobs there. |

Thanks for the info. Bandung sounds good, and somewhat similar to the city of Baguio in the Philippines, where ghost found a town at altitute (about 800m above sea level) and decent conditions to stay fit, at cooler temps. compared with the lowlands.
What kinds of schools are there in Bandung? Ghost is a certified Canadian teacher with a B.A., B.Ed., M.A. and a T.E.S.L. Certificate, and graduate of the McGill faculty of Education......(ghost is certified to teach English and French as Second Languages, and possesses Ontario and Quebec teaching licenses).
Right now ghost is waiting for a visa to work in Korea as a "teacher-trainer" there, but when it finishes that post, plans to come to Indonesia.
Thanks for the information.
Ghost, currently substitute teacher in Montreal, Canada |

Hi,
you'll have no trouble fitting in... my only suggestion is to get out and meet the people, this is how you will understand their culture, and learn the language, much more quicker than being stuck in some indonesian lesson in a boring classroom
I have many friends moslem and non moslem... I've never had any problems with either... it has never affected our friendships...
about Bandung, I really dont like that place as a city...now since the new toll road has been built, its full of Jakarta people every weekend and the traffic is bad... my suggestion is get out into the surrounding areas of Bandung... such as Ciater... Ciwidey.. and Lembang.... much nicer areas...and a place to see the "real Indonesia" |

Ciater, Lembang, lovely , and of course no work, Unless you fancy working the paddy fields or driving an ojek. Those places are nice to live if you have a car to drive into bandung to work but if you're planning THAT kind of expense, I should bring plenty of that korean cashola with you.
You may find that you're a bit over qualified for Indo, certainly around Bandung there aren't many schools that could adequatly compensate you -ghost is ,after all , qualified up the whazzoo.
A couple of km out of town, where most of the teachers live, would be great running territory and i'm sure you'd encounter no resentment towards your tanktop, you could even suck a beer while you ran.
Hope you don't actually speak in the third person, that would be truly irritating. |
