The key is who does it have 'prestige' with... and it is probably not the expats. We really don't matter anyway in their scheme of things.
I would say that among the locals, HCT does have more prestige because at UAEU, it is open enrollment for all. I would say that also among employers, HCT has more prestige than UAEU. In particular for employers who require a higher level of English.

I am not sure how VS worked out that UAEU is open enrolment for all. School leaving exams and CEPA do count. And it's a lot harder to get into some faculties than others.
HCT are colleges, offering diplomas etc - universities such as UAEU, ZU etc offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The world over university degrees carry more prestige than lower level qualifications. Not always justifiably, but it's how things tend to work.
Working in a place where we have at times had HCT interns placed with us I can see that the level of English is not all it's cracked up to be and the work ethic is still lacking.
HCT is better at PR and that's really the key - they are good at getting reports of minor happenings into the local press. UAEU is notoriously bad at PR; student and staff successes go unreported so people assume they don't happen. |

I have seen the school leaving exam - English section... to say it is not terribly challenging is about the best I can say.
You can score near 100% on the English portion and be at a high elementary level. It was a shock to many students who had assumed that they actually knew the language, and there were many tears after the first exams at tertiary level.
The CERT program at HCT was developed to try to find a place for the low level students that clogged the UAEU system. After all, Sheikh Zayed's promise was a university education for every Emirati that wanted one... but reality does tend to intrude.
