I'm visiting Cambodia next week, and wondering about a couple of things;
When I was last in Cambodia 3 years ago, there were no ATM's, is this still the case? Also, I was completey cash society, especially US cash, can you use traveller's cheques?
Can you cross by land from Thailand into Cambodia and vice versa?

I can't seem to find the map, but it proves that there are ATMs in PP.
I believe I also saw one in Sihanoukville. I ate a lot of pizza while I was there, so I may have imagined it. |

I never did try to do the land crossing, but I can answer the other two questions.
Yes to both ATM's and traveller's cheques.
Spent New Year's eve on Serendipity Beach, what a blast. I'd move to Cambodia in a second if I wasn't so scared of becoming a drug addict. |

I know for certain that there are ATMs in Siam Reap, Phnomh Penh, and Sihanoukville. All the ones I used when I was there 2 months ago dispensed US dollars.
There are lots of places in Phnomh Penh that will cash traveller's cheques, particularly in the Boeng Kak Lake area. Commision is 3 or 4%.
You can cross by land into Cambodia from Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. |

So, then, what's the best way to cross into Cambodia from Thailand?
For instance, what if one wanted to go to Serendipity Beach, is it best to just fly to Pnom Phen and then bus it to Sihanoukville area? Is that possible? How long does it take by bus from P. Phen to Sihanoukville? |

It depends on how much time and money you have, really.
The nearest border crossing to Sihanoukville is Hat Lek/Koh Kong. Koh Kong is the town on the Cambodian side and, from there, it's a 3 hour boat ride to Sihanoukville. There's also a bus service, but the road connecting the 2 is unfishished, there are 4 river ferry crossings, and it can take 6-8 hours on a bad, wet day.
To get to this border crossing from Bangkok you'd take a bus to Trat, and from there to Hat Lek. If you're coming here for the beaches, Trat is the gateway to the islands of Koh Chang, which are really beautiful.
If you fly to Phnomh Penh, a bus from there to Sihanoukville should take maybe 5-7 hours. Again, travel by road in Cambodia is very, very slow. |
