I'm sure that I should know this, but I don't. I know that a DOS is a Director of Study, so what's a FAO?

In what context do you see it? I am assuming Foreign Affairs Office

Of course, it could be:
Fully Aware Octogenarian

Okay, so my joke was stupid. It made me laugh, though.

Having to do with a school. People say that if you find a school with a good FAO, you're set. But I still don't know what a FAO is.. . .

FAO stands for Foreign Affairs Office.
The head of the office is the FAO director. Below him are the FAO staff.
This is the office charged with recruiting of the FE and meeting all of the FE's needs and requirements.

There is no such thing as a "Foreign Affairs Officer." Only the PSB and PLA have officers.
