Hallo ladies and gents,

I have been reading other topics and hope I'm not repeating here; I was wondering what anyone knows about the prospects for a British national teaching ESL in the States?

A bit about me:
I have a CELTA (Pass A) from London, and have taught in Spain and Italy at nearly all levels for almost 2 years. I do NOT, however, have a degree. I'm moving to the US to live with my girlfriend, and would prefer a larger city, or anywhere in California.

A lot of the ads I've seen require degrees and often are only open to Americans. The other problem is a working visa - do most schools include this in the job package?

Any help anyone may have would be hugly appreciated.
Thanks all!

Bertie

hi i've tried you wont be able to get a job in the USA, as basically the job can be filled by an USA citizen. Your best to try immigrating first then looking!

There is the Visiting International Faculty (VIF) Program which recruits qualified teachers from around the world to work in USA schools. However, as you only have a CELTA and not an education degree, I'm not sure if you could apply - but it might be worth a look.

The only other option I can think of would be immigrating through your girlfriend (assuming she's a USA citizen).

Without knowing your age it would be hard to say if you qualify for a working visa. I know in Canada there is a working holiday scheme for those 18-30 to work in a number of countries, including the UK. You might want to do a search for working holiday type programs through your local embassy.

Chan: I had a look at the VIF program, and it seems near impossible without a degree. I applied anyway! Thanks for that.

Symphany and adz, I'm 25 now, and as Adz says, the working visas are for students, which I sadly no longer qualify as..

Thanks for the help though, most appreciated.
