The "worth" of such a degree from an Israeli university (outside most of the Islamic world) is on par with a similar degree from a university in the U.S., UK, Australia, or anywhere else.
This is what I want to know-concretely, not anecdotally.
As for the amazingly naive query of Mr. Cowell, about why it would not be so, lets just say that it was not my grandmothers ambition to mop floors in a grocery store and if things have been equal she would not have been restricted to doing so.
And of course I have no interest in much of the Gulf. I have an acquientence in Saudi who keeps me well informed of the varied social opportunities available, most centering on grape juice in various forms. |

Agreed. There is absolutely no evidence to the contrary.
Once again: In what specific field do you want a Ph.D.? |

The question awaits an answer Mr. C. And to answer your question, anthropological linguistics. |

You have presented no rational reason why a Ph.D. in anthropological linguistics from an Israeli university would NOT be as highly valued in the US, UK, or Australia as a degree from any other university. In fact, both Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University have been ranked among the top 100 world universities in both social sciences and humanities.
(By the way, there doesn't seem to be any faculty member specialising in anthropological linguistics at your school of choice: Tel Aviv U. Nor is there a specialist at Hebrew University. Hmmm...)
You have simply presented unrelated information about political boycotts started by Palestinian and pro-Palestinianin organisations in the past. In what specific case has one of those boycotts led to the refusal to hire a degree holder from Israel? In which countries? (Your contention that English is an L2 in Israel simply doesn't hold water in the world of higher education.)
Why are you so fearful? Do you know somebody who received a Ph.D. from an Israeli university and CANNOT be employed elsewhere?
There are indeed Ph.D. holders from Israeli universities teaching at (and currently being hired at) American and British universities. Why wouldn't there be? That is not an anecdote. It's a fact about academic departments and faculties that you can check for yourself. New York University has hired two in the past year alone, as just one example. |

There's a lot of work on applied linguistics done in Israel because the teaching of Hebrew and English, together with the multiple country of origins of many Israel's provide excellent research fodder.
One of the best books ever written on L2 teaching was by the now Emiritus Professor at Tel Aviv, Bernard Spolsky.
However, I would have thought for anthropological linguistics you would want a department that specializes, and I would presume that the US, UK, Russia or India have more opportunity for research in the field than Israel.
If you're going to do a doctorate in a rare speciality, you need to know what are the departments with the best reputation in that speciality. |

Stephen, I really don't think he knows what he wants. If he did, he would have done the research already -- instead of asking anonymous folks on an Internet forum. It doesn't take much time to find precisely what he's looking for.
Stories about grandmothers mopping floors seem a bit like -- hmmm, what's the word? -- grandstanding. |
