I have four years experience teaching at in Japan at the English school Nova (which shows I have endurance, if nothing else) and this year I will complete my secondary teaching postgrad qualification in Australia. I will also pick up a CELTA certification.
I'm thinking of heading to the UK and was wondering what kind of jobs I should aim for. High school? Universities? I'm not sure what the job market is like there. |

You stand a much better chance of getting a job in the secondary sector if you are attempting to get a position whilst outside the uk. University teaching posts in TEFL/TESOL tend to be short term and just in time hirings for things like summer and pre-sessional courses. Academic posts, probably like in Australia, demand things like a publication record etc. This in essence means that the temporary instructors work like slaves to fund the conference trips of the hallowed few.
There are several agencies recruiting australian teachers for the the UK secondary market but I would be surprised if these are for EFL posts. Specialist EFL tutors in schools tend to get into it after teaching English or another foreign language, at least that was my experience. You will also find it easier if you are under 30 and go on the working holiday scheme. Older people can get a sponsor but very few state schools will want to make the effort.
Here's a website - not particularly recommended but one of many.
