Yes, and there have been female heads of state in Turkey, the Philippines, Pakistan, India, Indonesia and other non "Western" countries too. I do find it interesting that you fail to mention these women.
And in nearly every case they have gained the job because of the sudden death of their husband, or in the case of Indira Ghandi, Benazir Bhutto, and Megawatti inherited it from their father. Incidentally the post of Prime Minister in India and Turkey is not that of Head of State.

Similarly, the post of Prime Minister in UK is not that of Head of State.
It is her majesty, the Queen ELIZABETH II, Queen of England, Scotland, Wales, and the others, is the UK's Head of State.

Benazir Bhutto did not inherit the premierships from her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He was killed in 1979. Benazir Bhutto won the election in 1988 and 1993, and became a Prime Minister. It was by vote not by hereditary!

And how many laws does good old Queen Liz get to make... what say does she have in anything? Pretty much equal to what I have from over here in the US... but she does have a nicer home and more assets... and gets to make a few dull speeches to parliament.

And would Benazir Bhutto been even considered as a candidate if her father was Ali Mohammed the college professor from Lahore? It was nothing but hereditary!!
