Hi, Can anyone tell me whether one needs a PGCE to find work as a primary teacher in New Zealand or whether a Master of Arts in Education plus experience is sufficient?

Thank you!

Hello there,

In answer to your question, it depends on your education degree being accepted by;

1. New Zealand Qualifications Authority www.nzqa.govt.nz - they assess all overseas quals. Costs around $500 NZ and takes a month at least.
You should ask about any extra study you need to do and whether PGCE is the best way or a post grad course in NZ. You can contact a university in NZ also, there are main ones that I can think of; Canterbury, Victoria, Auckland, Otago and Massey.

2.If your qualification is accepted by NZQA as equivalent to a NZ teaching degree then you will have to register with the New Zealand Teachers Council www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz costs around $200 NZ.

Application forms are all there plus help line or email contacts.
Hope this is of some help to you!
