I have just finished reading a novel 'The Uprising' by the above which although heavy going, is definitely worth a look.

I will give you one name of a non-Romanian author. Olivia Manning wrote well on the absurdities of teaching English with the British Council in the Balkans in the build-up to WWII. And I cannot remember the title !

I think that Bram Stoker guy wrote a scary story about some vampire dude out there.

I realise this is three years old, but in case you're still around.... Must read Eminescu (poetry), the biggest romanian poet there ever was. Also worth reading Ion Luca Caragiale, if you can find a good translation, one of the best playwrights who influenced Eugene Ionescu / o (The Bald Soprano, Rhinoceros - some of his plays - though originally written in French; a lot of it is a result of Pirandello and Caragiale - theater of the absurd). Also, if you find a good translation of Nichita Stanescu, also poetry, it's pretty interesting. I can go on and on, but what do you like to read - prose, poetry, theater; realism, romanticism, etc? I should be able to narrow it down then.

I forgot to mention. For God's sake, stay away from "Dracula", no offense to the guy who posted, but it makes me ill. 1) It's horrible writing, from a literary perspective, 2) it offends Romanians as Vlad Tepes was a national hero to that country since he managed to kick the Ottoman Empire out for good, 3) it's boring as all hell unless you like that sort of thing. I do, however, recommend "In Search of Dracula" by McNally and Florescu, a non ficiton book and a theory of who Dracula might have really been. TIP: Try to read between the lines and use your judgement.
