Anybody see the ad on Dave's looking for EFL teachers for the new "Australian College of Kuwait"?
They say they are paying the equivalent of $4000 US a month, which sounds pretty good.
Of course that probably includes housing and so on.
Opinions? |

Hi Cleo
It seems new places are popping up regularly these days. Naturally I (nor anyone else I suspect) don't know anything about this place. All I would say is to be very cautious. With these new places, the important thing to find out is who is setting it up - what Sheikh is behind it. Personally I avoid any college - no matter what country they stick in their name - until they have some kind of track record.
Kuwait is a bureaucratic nightmare and the last thing one would want is to join an employer that doesn't know what it is doing either. You will be the one to pay the price in aggravation.
I read the ad too. I can't remember -- did it say US$4000 total package or did it mean AU$? Either way, the important thing is how much is the salary - not their estimation of what their benefits are worth. I wouldn't work there for less than 800-900 KD. In the late 90's, a housing allowance of 250 KD got only a passable flat, so I would want more than that now. Plus the furniture allowance then was 2500 KD - provided basics, but no luxury items like a TV. So, this does not appear a very generous offer.
Might be fine, but I'd be very very careful -- same as with the new American University in Kuwait which is also just starting up.
