I was a teacher in GYA for the 2005-2006 academic year. Beginning in that year, the English teaching positions were changed from "volunteer" to a paid position. There is a salary, it is not volunteer, and the salary is comparable to similar schools in Addis, while they can provide free housing and some other benefits.
Yes you should feel sure about taking a position at this school before you go. It is a committment. You can get much information from the school administration, and/or message or email me with any questions, I am happy to tell you about my experience.
And yes the school is upper middle class, for the most part. That part you got right Gulam.
Gulam, I am wondering...in what capacity and how long ago did you work with GYA? |

i've recently accepted a job with GYA after reading about it extensively on this forum and researching Addis through other means, and I emailed Gulam after he posted this for "more information," and guess what? I never heard back. |
