Hi. My girlfriend and i are looking to live in Mexico for a while, preferably in a smallish city. We are just starting our planning and are looking for advice/direction/connections/etc. Ideally, we'd love to work in a public school or other government program, but i don't know if this is possible. Of course, we do need some salary to live on... Thanks, David

You probably wouldn't want to work in a public school as an English teacher. To give you an idea of the situation at the two public high schools in the city where I live, English classes meet for about an hour a day, 60 students per class, and most of them are taking English only because it's required. Students don't have to do well in the class, because it's not figured as part of their GPA. Both pay and working conditions leave much to be desired. If you and your girlfriend have MA in TESOL/Linguistics degrees, you'd have a shot at state university jobs, but those would probably be part-time, and the pay isn't all that good. Government English teaching jobs are usually pretty decent but part-time. Everyone wants them. However, if you're not a local with connections, your chances of getting one of those are very slim.

As for smaller cities, the smaller the city, the fewer options there are for teaching English. With two of you sharing housing and other expenses, you could get by okay on your teachers' wages, if you're willing to work lots of hours and live conservatively. If you plan on working legally (work visas,) plan to have at least USD$3000 available for the two of you for settling-in expenses plus money for plane or bus fare home in case things don't work out.

Best wishes!
Smile
