An English teacher on one month leave decided to come to Antalya to take the Tmer Turkish second level course.

The hotel the teacher found seemed clean and nice and was close to the school. The management of the hotel demanded at least one weeks rent for the room in advance which the teacher paid.

The teacher paid the amount, but soon after discovered that the water from the taps in the washbasin and shower were cold. Upon complaining to the management about the lack of hot water, the hotel employees simply laughed and mumbled something about the lack of sun being responsible for the lack of hot water because they have a reservoir system which relies on sun.

The teacher should have been careful from the start because when shown the different rooms in the hotel it seemed that the entire hotel was empty despite looking clean. Why would a hotel in Antalya be empty..?

A shouting match then ensued between the management and the teacher with the management refusing to reimburse the money the teacher asked for.

Only when the teacher mentioned that he would get the management of Tmer and the police involved did the hotel management reluctantly refund the money to the teacher.

The whole episode would have turned out badly for the teacher...but the connection with Tmer saved the day. I hate to imagine what would have happened to Joe Doe with no connections and purpose in the city. That money would have gone. Someone with zero Turkish language skills is also at a disadvantage.

This is a warning to teachers who come to Antalya. It is an expensive place with all the restaurants charging exorbitant prices for simple meals and constant harrassment on the promenade by worker touts.

The Tmer course is a good one, but be prepared to have 'no life' for one month if you take it, because with 4 class hours and a ton of homework there is little or no time for other things.

Why does one always refer to oneself in the 3rd person singular?

Why does (this) one almost always manage to portray Turkey in a bad light?

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Except there usually is no heat....

Ghost, please stop writing like you are a reporter for the National Enquirer or some other pseudo-serious tabloid. This is only a casual forum- chattiness and wit are allowed. Third person references to yourself are unnecessary. A certain teacher employed at a private lise/primary school in central Anatolya, which you visited earlier in the year, is feeling rather perturbed by your journalistic techniques. Although she would prefer to remain nameless, she does believe that a declaration should be issued to all teachers in this country that first person singular IS an option and will be actively encouraged, and in certain situations, enforced. This declaration will not be affected by Ramazan and will be put into effect after iftar this evening.

Thank you.

Very Happy

Oh dear !

There is a nice expression in German. "Pechvogel" means someone who seems to attract bad luck wherever he goes.

Could it be that ghost is one of these ?

He seems to have a long litany of woes which he insists on posting here. I thought I was a miserable old beep. It is nice to have a rival !

Very Happy Despite being an avid reader of Ghost's posts that have now reached a new height of tragi-comedic mastery I do wonder why he insists on staying in a country and amongst a people that he so clearly despises.

As for me, I am in the final two weeks of my TEFL course which consists of two weeks teaching practice in Greece. Hope to see you all soon and am very much looking forward to the next miserable installment.....perhaps headed "[b]Teacher deported"

Cheers
Dave

Well sometimes people have a run of bad luck. But "ghost" seems to have had nothing but bad luck since leaving his native land. Maybe it is time to call it quits and go back to wherever it was.
