Warning to all who apply for teaching positions with the Virgin Islands Department of Education. You will get the run around. Those who are in charge are constantly in meetings or out of the building. Many of their teachers are NOT even certified to teach and they are in desperate need of qualified instructors, but when qualified instructors attempt to apply and contact HR there, it is a perpetual nightmare. I am ventilating for myself and others who have had the same lamentable rudeness and disrespect. Unreal!

I just want to say that there IS a need for good teachers in the USVI, but the bureacracy is tough and it is hard to get in. Consider a trip to visit, call back many times, add something very creative to your application packet. Remember, your perseverance to get the job will just prepare you more to help the students who also have to deal with the same system (and don't have a choice).

Application process. Thats the tip of the iceberg.

If you haven't worked in the West Indies, particulary in her public schools, I would strongly advise against it. Its not suburbia.

Have you been to the Virgin Islands? If you really want to live down there and you haven't been there, do a PMV first. If you like it, get a job in one of their many private schools: All Saints, Antilles, St Peter and Paul or Montessori. After a year or two, find yourself a public school.
