Anyone thinking of coming to the Republic of Macedonia to work illegally should be aware that on January 1st, 2008 it became a lot harder to do that. Until the beginning of this year, it was possible to stay in Macedonia for 90 days simply on the strength of the entry stamp in one's passport. If you wanted to stay longer, you simply went to the nearest border crossing, walked across the frontier, did an immediate U-turn and came back in again. In so doing, you acquired a new entry stamp and the right to remain in Macedonia for another 90 days.

As of January 1st, 2008, things have changed. An entry stamp will only allow you to stay for 90 days in the 6-month period counting from your date of entry. So, when your 90 days are up, you have to leave the country and stay out until the balance of the 6-month period has passed.

In making this change, the Republic of Macedonia has brought its entry regulations into line with EU norms.
