I was just wondering if anyone knew where there is a high French population outside of France, Switzerland, and Belgium. I want to go somewhere where I can practise my French, but I'd like to avoid the above countries because the cost of living is high. I realize I'm probably SOL, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Laughing

French speaking parts of Africa. Ivory Coast used to be good but not so much any more. Chad is pretty cheap.

Maybe the French island in the carribean?

Last time I checked, Morocco and Algeria weren't in Europe, and Corsica and Reunion were part of France proper, and thus ruled out by the original poster. Seems some people can't resist giving bad information for the sake of hearing their own voice Rolling Eyes

Pray tell, why didn't YOU look in an encyclopaedia?

The original post didn't mention Europe in the body of its text, so I responded to that. I've just checked and seen that Europe is, indeed, specified in the thread's title.

SORRY!

It seems that for some people "reference skills" means posting a question on this website.

Would some rural areas of France be a bit cheaper than urban areas of France? Get out your easel and water colors, Van Gogh, and become a starving artist in some quaint French village.

Er...Luxembourg, but that wouldn't be classified as an inexpensive destination.

I like the West Africa suggestion. I think Morocco wouldn't be an ideal destination because the first language of most Moroccans would probably be Arabic. French may be relegated to second language status there.

Countries like Benin, Togo and Cameroon may be a go, but you may learn to speak in a dialect rather than "standard French." No matter, it's all about the practice. My German became fluent in Austria where most hardly speak hochdeutsch.

Well Algeria is very close to Europe. And I am sure the reports in the media are exaggerated. Perhaps you could team up with that guy in Korea who was determined to go to the Congo ?

They speak French in the Congo too you know,

Go on ! I DARE you !
