Hi,
One of the reasons I want to come to Brazil is experience the fabulous beach areas. Can anyone reccomend some good cities on the beach, and not too touristy? At least 50, 000 people living in or around area.
S.,
Eric

My students were always going to Fortaleza and Recife during their vacations because of the beaches, but I haven't been there so I can't contribute more than to say that they're SAID to be amazing.

Hi Eric,

It is true that most people prefer northeastern Brazil (known here as the 'Nordeste') where Recife, Natal, etc are located but the southeast and south regions also have excellent beaches (if that is what you are looking for). You should try Santos, in Sao Paulo state, with a population of 500,000 inhabitants (although in the summer this figure will double!).

Florianopolis (Floripa, for short), in Santa Catarina state, is also a good place to spend time; in fact, Floripa's beaches (there are many!) are renowned for their verve! Housing is cheaper if you live in one of the small towns near Florianopolis, especially in Palhoa (20-minute bus ride to Florianopolis).

I hope this helps,
Bruce
