Can anyone familiar with Riyadh point me in the direction of Sulaimaniya District ? Specifically, to Prince Mamdouh Street.

Well, Uncle Scot, are you looking for the British Visa Application Centre?
Because I know that the British Visa Centre is located exactly in the Prince Mamdouh Bin Abdul Aziz Street, Sulemaniya District.

Here is the Map for it, I hope it will help:
http://www.vfs-uk-sa.com/images/map-riyadh.gif

If you take a taxi, and if he does not know Prince Mamdouh street, just tell him is near Aljazeerah Mall, which is known to most taxi drivers! Or tell him it is cross Layla street, because there is only one Layla in Riyadh!

BTW, Uncle Scot, if you are going to her Majesty's visa centre, could you please leave your mobile and any SNP stuff in your home!, because the people in the Visa section do not want anything related to politics inside the centre! Laughing

A pure coincidence, mon cher numero sept. My visit to Riyadh has nothing to do with visas for the UKofGB&NI. Thanks for the map.

This comment will not go down well with some of the senior posters. The Scottish curmudgeon will have a fit. Lucky for you that Her Majesty (Cleo) is on holiday (vacation).

My apologies...what I meant to say is "Saudi sucks all of the life out of FUN!"

I doubt that "Uncle" Scot needs to apply for a visa to enter the UK!

Saudi is not for everyone. I don't mind it and find it easier to live here than in Birkenhead or Motherwell or Des Moines.

Dera scot47,
And when, pray tell did you live in Des Moines (so you could make that valid comparison?)
Regards,
John

At least Des Moines has Drake University, as well as a regional state university, and several liberal arts colleges, where some type of culture and free exchange of ideas is encouraged. Can you say that about anywhere in your magic kingdom? And, in general, people take their higher education seriously in Iowa. You'd have to be Cleo or Scot47 to actually prefer Riyadh over even lowly Des Moines.

In my case I am not in Riyad. Amongst the many teachers I have met here I have not come across one who was shanghaied into coming here. They all came of their own free will. If they can't stand it, they can leave.

We are volunteers. Those who dislike the place are often held here by greed. The disposable income they have here is still considerably more than they would have in other places.

Of course, for those with an "alternative" lifestyle, there are other attractions.

I was using Des Moines as an example. I am not now, and never have been a resident of the USA. If Jefferson were still President I might agree to visit.

I have only been here a short time (in Saudi) and from what I have seen, the teachers who make it here, have interests that they can pursue on their own, or have a small circle of friends with similar interests.

With regard to exercise, in the U.S. exercising at temps of over 40 centigrade is considered 'hazardous' - and this is the kind of temp. I face at around 6.30 pm, when out for my 60 minute 'power walk' around KFUPM campus. Fortunately, I am never too far away from a water source, and because I exercise after sundown, this is not a problem.

Recent acquisition of a bicycle, will help me get around this vast campus. Cost of the bike was a mere 320 riyals, so it might not last too long (one speed), but it is useful, as relying on the minibus on this campus, or taxis, is not always convenient.
