I have noticed that this seems to be where the bulk of you all are located and are the most recommended areas. I know that these are large cities... but is there another reason they are so popular vs other areas in Peru?

....probably because that's where all the schools that give visas are located. also, the salaries could be 3 or 4X higher in bigger cities, or capital cities than small towns.

if you're teaching privates, probably more available in bigger cities??

Lima is a big city. Trujillo and Arequipa are big cities, but nothing like LIma. MOst peple are in Lima, because there are lots of jobs AND international schools. In the other two there is only one international school in each city.

Pay is better in Lima as well, but cost of living in higher.

Personally, I hate Lima. And can't wait to leave.

Other places are Piura, CHiclayo, and Cusco for the majority of ESL jobs.

As far as giving visas, I'd say there are TONS of people here in Lima working illegaly as teachers, maybe that's why there here. It's easy to find work and you don't need a visa.

I dislike that constant annoying semi-sweet lingering smell that you never seem to be able to escape from when you are in Lima. However, any big city has this. I assume it is from the thousands of humans in a small area will seperate domiciles with their own meals being prepared. I have noticed the same smell in New York, Madrid, Philadephia, and Atlanta.

Chiclayo is growing rapidly and is said to be the friendliest city in Peru. It oculd be an option. Some schools there that have their kids take the Cambridge exams so they could be interested in native teachers.

Cajamarca also has an IB school. There are english institutes all over the place, but few and far between will get you a visa.
