This is a valid point, but I am not clear whether it is true anymore.
Until a couple of years ago, you could end up one-third more for a trip from anywhere inside the mainland to Hong Kong than flying to Shenzhen.
From Shenzhen Airport, which is 37 kms from Shenzhen city, it will set you back another 50 RMB/HK dollars to reach HK by land. If you take a ferry from Shekou (near Shenzhen) to HK, it will cost 100 HK dollars.
In other words, you could save one third of a ticket's price if you flew "domestically", and it was one third more expensive if you flew "internationally" (Hong Kong or any foreign destination!).
However, this spring I noticed that ticket prices from mainland airports to international destinations are hardly more expensive than those buy in supposedly-cheap Hong Kong. |
