I've done this with several of my friends, and found that (on average) the lower the number, the better the friend.

Take your age and divide it by the number of places you have lived in.

By places, I mean cities, not individual houses. If I counted all the different dorms and student flops I shifted between during my University days, my average would drop like the dollar.

If you've lived in a city more than once, only count it again if you've had to make a new set of friends when you returned (I'm trying to figure out how frequent movement affects socialization).

And visits don't coun't. Let's say at least 6 months to count as "living" in a place.

So, if you are 30 years old, and, by the above standards, have lived in 10 places, your average is 3.

SO,
I'm 32, and have lived in 13 different places in my life. That's, ummmm, sh*t, I'm a beeping English teacher, where's the calculator, 2.46 years.

[22 (Canada) + 3 (Japan) + 1 (China)] / 3 = Just over 8, I think.

I'm in the 2-3 yr. category.

I was once asked by a Japanese JHS to give a speech on graduation day about embracing change and taking it as an opportunity for trying new things. I mentioned the number of time I had moved up to that point (in the 30s) and a gasp went up. After the speech, the Principal took me into his office and commiserated with my miserable childhood and how abused I was. He then advised me to never mention it again as there was obviously something wrong with me and people would think badly of me for it. I appreciated both the sincerity of his advice and the irony of the situation. Obviously, the message of the speech I was requested to give didn't get through.

I will have been in this town in Japan for nearly six years come February when I leave. In my 32 years, it's the longest place I've ever lived in. I beat my previous record by two years.

I need to use my fingers:

Dundee(4 times), Edinburgh(around 10 times), London, Chelmsford, Coventry, Basingstoke, Enschede, Hengelo, Munich, Slough, Xelaju, Queretaro, Madrid.

Not counting the multiples my average is 3.

My average is 4.35, but something is wrong...

I lived in Des Moines for 18years
in Iowa City for 3.5
in Santiago de Chile for 0.5
in Cuenca, Ecuador for 0.5
in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for 0.5
in Nara, Japan for 1.5
in February it will be 6 in Mexico

That adds up to 30.5 years(minus two months)
But I'm 31years and 1 month old!

I must have been abducted by aliens! Shocked

I'm in the 4-5 year range, I think.

17+ --nearly 18--in San Diego, CA
4 in Berkeley, CA + 2ish in El Cerrito, CA (different city, but damn close to Berkeley--like, half a mile or so--I probably shouldn't count it...)
2ish in Prague
2ish in Monterey, CA
and about six months so far in Japan

Ummmmmm

1 year in a small log cabin in Long Beach, BC, Canada
then 16 years in the Cowichan Valley about 5 hours south of that
then 2 years in Victoria (university)
then a month in Berlin and three months in the west of Eire
then 6 months back in BC trying to fnd a job
then a few months in London with Irish boyfriend to see if I wanted to live there (no)
then 2 years back in Victoria trying to finish degree (didn't)
then 2 and a half years back in London (sans Irish boyfriend) with a lot of short stints in Ghana, South Africa, most of Europe and North America
then 6 months in Cape Town
then 2 years back in Victoria, still trying to finish degree, find work, do TEFL, find a direction in life, etc
and now, a year and a half in Turkey.

Not sure what I'll do next...

7 in Regina
20 in 3 different cities in the Vancouver area
1 in Seoul
1.5 in Japan

2.5 years of travelling, but that doesn't count. At least aliens didn't take me.

An average of a little over 5 in one city.

I'm 26 now.

Been here in Shanghai for 2+ years. There was Bangkok in the summer, but that wasn't long enough to count. Before that, Vancouver Canada for 12 years. Before that, a small town in Nortern BC called Terrace for 12 years.

That makes 26 / 3 = 8.7

Still need to get that average down.
