I'll be staying in Bahrain for one night in mid January. I'm looking for a simple and clean single room in the 10 - 15 dinah price range. A friend recommends the San Rock hotel. Any other recommendations?

pay 20 to 25 dinar. You'll really notice the difference.

You should follow the example of some senior members of the 500 Club (for more on that body see Saudi Arabia).

On their weekend visits from the Eastern province of KSA they were in the habit of taking with them sleeping bags and tents. They then slept in the desert, to the great amusement of the Bahrainis.

Of course if they were SERIOUS members of the Fraternity of The Five Hundred they would not possess such expensive accoutrements.

(Five hundred riyals (=50BD) is the maximum monthly expenditure that these miserable sods allow themselves to spend.)

What news from the Fraternity of Five Hundred ? I did hear of one of our colleagues who showed up at Gulf Air offices and paid for his ticket to London IN ONE-RIYAL NOTES !

What do you do with your cookie-jar of one-riyal notes ?

When I left Jubail I found myself in possession of enough coins to pay a round the world ticket. Unfortunately no shop would take them. Left them with the houseboy.

The one who paid for his ticket in one-riyal notes is the same one who boasts that he knows the best walking route from Heathrow to Victoria Coach Terminal.

On a more cheerful note I can report that I stayed ın the Cıty Centre Hotel. Defınıtely an ımprovement on the Tylos whıch has all the charm of a B.....llo for the 8th Army ın Mersa Matruh cırca 1943.

Someone I met recently is staying in the Awal Hotel (Bab Al Bahrain - near the Bahrain International Hotel) for 15 BD a night including breakfast. She said it's ok - clean and she feels safe enough.

The Awal is a brothel-they have an in-house porn channel but the top floor is supposed to be as family like as you are going to get. I cannot believe that a woman would stay there unless she was working.

She's had no problems at all and said it was much better than the Bahrain Int. Belive me if she was having problems we'd all know about it.

The Bahrain Intl is a dirty, smellier version of the Awal.

The Awal Residence near Adliya is ok - it's self catering apartments but they're clean and also where the British Council put teachers while they are flat hunting as well as those over here on short courses. Think it's about 20BD a night and they have a small cafe downstairs.

Never heard of it. I thought you were talking about the Awal Hotel.
