|
|
| I'm thinking about making the move from Buenos Aires to Loja, Ecuador, and I'm currently speaking with the canadian house center about teaching for them. Anyone out there who knows anything about them? The contract would be 5 or more months, 5 hours per day at 4 usd per hour, and the option of extra private classes and translations. I'm mostly looking for comments on the institute, but if anyone wants to comment about the wages for life in Loja I would love to hear about that as well. Thanks! |

| I dont know too much about Loja. If they are going to sponsor you for a visa, then maybe it would be worth it. If not, and you have or can get a visa yourself, then I think $4 is pretty low. I think there are other areas in Ecuador where you could make significantly more than $4 an hour. If you are interested in hearing about possible opportunities in the coast area, PM me. |

I've never heard of the center, and strangely neither has our rep in Loja. So I guess we can say it isn't super well known. Doesn't mean anything bad, but makes me wonder.
I agree with Just a Mirage- $4 is low, even in Loja. QUito and Guayaquil pay $6 to $9 per hour, though expenses are much higher. Centers I do know in Loja pay $5 to $6.
Best,
Justin |

| Thanks for all of your advice. Someone who read my post sent me this link to a blog about the institute: http://theendlessnow.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html. So I do trust it exists, but if I cant get them to spice up their offer a little, what other schools or institutes in Loja would you recommend I look into? |

...i've talked to them over the phone also. pretty good place i assume.
but like JT said, $4 is a little. just think, they have 10 students in the classs that pay at least $120 for an 8 week course. so, that's $60 a month or $15 a week, or $3 a day X 10 students = $30 per class while they pay you $4.
multiply that out to 15 students and they make $45 a class. the numbers just don't work for ESL teachers sometimes. but, i guess that's life. |

| I'm just going to follow up on the thread I started... I did go there and it was great. A little disorganized from time to time, but friendly, relaxed, supportive and very fun. I think a slight degree of disorganization is just part of running a language institute. Talk to Gloria, she's a wonderful person. They also recently opened up a new location in Machala. |

| Swimweh, how long were you there for? Did you have a work visa? The reason I'm asking is that I've seen some shocking reviews/horror stories about Canadian House. I'd pretty much ruled them out as a potential employer because I've not heard anything good about them. But maybe they aren't as bad as people make out. |

Hi,
I'm on the verge of talking to Canadian House myself. Wages may be bad but I'm used to being skint! What are these horror stories? This would be my first foriegn posting so any advice appreciated. Ecuador is my country of choice for family reasons, I want to stay for ages and I've had no other offers so far. |

| I've just found out that they're actually partners with i to i, my training provider, I just happened to apply independantly without realising. Doesn't mean too much I guess, but they are for real! I'm going to go for an interview anyway. |

If anyone has contact details for the new branch in Machala, I'd appreciate it- I have a friend who's just moved there, and might be interested in checking it out...
Saludos,

None of this is my personal experience, just hearsay that I've heard or read from other people.
But the story goes that they encourage people to arrive and work on tourist visas, even though they know it's been clamped down on. People get there and find they are in a very vulnerable position without a proper visa, and get taken advantage of, e.g. pressed into doing lots of extra hours for no extra pay, being tied to contracts with them for over priced sub standard accommodation, etc. Then they won't help people get work visas, or give them the paperwork they need to apply themselves.
Also, if students fail a course, they will pass them anyway if the parents make enough fuss and are willing to pay, which makes teaching intermediate and higher levels impossible because a significant proportion of the class don't have an adequate grasp of English. They then use that as an excuse to penalise the teacher because their class won't meet the pass rate.
That's only some of it.
To be honest it is made to sound so bad that it almost seemed too bad to be true (if you see what I mean), but then again they seem to have a really high staff turnover, so that makes me suspicious. |

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder - very quick reply to my application, then I found out they were linked to my course provider so I thought I'd go for the interview, but she was supposed to skype me 4 hours ago! I'm sitting here feeling foolish in my smart interview clothes, well, no, I'm going to bed now!
Thanks very much for this information. I will point i -to- i, my course provider, to this blog to make them aware of what may be going on. |
