..if you're going "long term" L.A., i would get it. bus accidents, hit in the street, hepatitus, theft/assault.

it's up to you, but i would get it. i had it when i had hepatitus and it paid for everything.

the Oregon guy who was stabbed 25 times on an EC beach last summer DIDN'T have anything. but, his sister is a doctor and arranged all his surgery for free at her hospital. his was very serious also, in a coma.

i would also get renter's insurance for your apt. i also had a Minolta Maxxum stolen from a hostal safe and it was replaced at 80% of $1000.

if you're the 5 shirt, 5 pants, 5 socks, and 1 suit person...and live a really routine, safe life you probably don't need it.

but, check around -- the insurance isn't all that expensive.

If you're going long term, get insurance in the country you'll be in. It's cheaper that way

....exactly -- there are several options to choose from in different countries like Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, etc.

here's an international coverage plan for laptops from a company called Safeware:

http://www.safeware.com/Products/IndividualCoverage.aspx

you sign up and then get a quote.

also, if you do own a home (or maybe live with your parents) the policy they have usually covers about $5000 of computer equipment theft anywhere in the world.
