I was born in 1988, but was adopted in the early 1990's by a Non-Romanian family. I speak no Romanian nor do I have any ties to this country. I hold a US passport and a learner's permit from my home state. Since I'm an American with no ties to Romania, would it be wort my effort to renounce my Romanian citizenship? |

If it involves dealing with the Romanian authorities it's almost certainly going to be an effort. One poster here has been trying for years to obtain citizenship...ironic that you want rid of yours.
As you're on a teaching forum would it be right to assume you're a teacher? Romanian citizenship would be great for you if you ver wanted to teach (or work in an field) in the EU. Why do you want to renounce it, if I may ask? |

I envy you, I've been trying to get romanian citizenship for about 8 years. No, don't renounce it. first off, you have the EU, or will have, open so that you can work there.
If you don't want to, I'm sure your kids would be happy for the opportunity.

Nope, by my calculations, she's only 18, my sister was born in 1989. At age 18 I didn't even know what career I wanted to persue. |

1988-2009? 18? Lucky that you're not a maths teacher
Out of interest, are there any disadvantages to having dual-citizenship? |

You're right. Scary enough I DID teach primary maths. So she's 20 or 21 depending on her birthday. I guess theere are. Like if you had dual cit from a bad country, like Cuba, Libya, Iraq. BUt Romania's not a bad country. |

Sorry I haven't responded to this post in a while!! My life's been kind of hectic. I am a college student from Western PA and I am studying business and networking. Second, the reason want to renounce or void my Romanian citizenship is because I feel it could be a burden in getting certain government clearances or certain jobs (networking sometimes requires higher clearances). I've read the US Government doesn't always like dual citizens. Sorry if it seems that I've been igniring everyone, I've just been very busy. |

THe US allows dual cit, but doesn't encourage it. Still, Romania's a part of the EU, it's not like you have cit with Afghanistan or soemthing |

No, don't renounce it. I agree with Nature girl- you never know - you might want to come and work in Europe. Keep all your options alive. |
