Qatar to get Community College

Doha: In a novel initiative to meet Qatars emerging education and labour market needs, the Supreme Education Council (SEC) will launch the US-model Community College in the country.

The college is aimed at successfully preparing students for entry-level professional positions in their fields, while also equipping them to pursue higher studies if they choose to do so. The institutions will help the country continue towards its goal of developing a modern, world-class education system that is purely Qatari both in principle and in practice, said Professor Ibrahim S Al Nuami, Chairperson of the Community College Steering Committee.

The Two-year College, which is expected to be launched in 2010, will act as a midway home for students transitioning from secondary school to college/university, also has roots in other countries under differing names. The committee will also examine and may adopt key innovations that will suit the educational ethos

of this country.

The Community College will provide the same collegiate environment that has created success stories in the lives and careers of countless individuals in other countries. Many of these colleges became known for producing well-trained mid-level professionals for the economic, social and other sectors. Qatars proposed Community colleges will be planned to provide the same type of environment and similar services while at the same time, adhering to the culture and heritage of the country, Al

Nuaimi said.

On the programmes to be offered by the college, he said the General Education/ Liberal studies covering Arts and Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences programmes leading to one-year certificates and two-year degrees that are accredited and that facilitate the transfer of college credits to universities, applicable towards Bachelors degrees.

The College will offer Specialized Programmes in the fields of Engineering Technologies, Medical Studies/Health Sciences, Information Technology and Business/Finance. These programmes will meet the needs of employers as well as be transferable to quality universities to enable students (if they so desire) to obtain Bachelors degrees.

The college will also offer programme in Developmental Studies that will strengthen the knowledge and skills of students to perform well in basic college- level work, while enabling them to acquire transferable credits towards degree programmes of their choice.

Recent studies conducted in Qatars education sector indicate a very urgent need for a community college-type of institution meet the current and emergent educational and labour market needs. The number of high school graduates from all types of schools will increase steadily and representatives from major sectors feel that a community college can successfully prepare students well for entry-level professional positions. US experts to advise on community college

Prof al-Naimi, third left, is seen with Das, Dr Elsner and Dr Ponitz
The Supreme Education Councils Community College of Qatar project has contracted with two distinguished experts from the US to advise its team on aspects relating to planning and developing the college.
Dr David Ponitz (president emeritus, Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio) and Dr Paul Elsner (chancellor emeritus, Maricopa Community College district Phoenix, Arizona) were in Qatar recently to check the status and advise on future steps for the Community College of Qatar.
During their visit, the experts met with a number of leaders in the education sector including the presidents of Qatar University, Stenden University, CNA-Qatar, and the Deans Council of Qatar Foundation, executive director of the Office of Her Highness, and HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education.
They consulted with the steering committee and the standing subcommittees, visited selected schools and talked with senior students and faculty, the QU Foundation Program and the Academic Bridge Program at Education City.
Dr Ponitz and Dr Elsner also paid a courtesy call on US Ambassador Joseph LeBaron.
The experts will send a report outlining future steps to the steering committee and plan to return to Qatar soon to continue their support role for the new colleges development process.
Dr Ponitz, who has a doctorate from Harvard University, was the founder president of Washtenaw Community College in Michigan, past chair of the board of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), and leads The League for Innovation in the Community College.
Dr Elsner, who obtained his doctorate from Stanford University, founded many of the campuses of Maricopa Community College district in Phoenix, Arizona.
Dr Elsner is the immediate past chair of the board of trustees for the Educational Testing Service (ETS), served on the board of directors of the AACC and as President of the board of trustees for American College Testing (ACT).
The basic concept for the project was envisioned by HH Sheikha Mozah Nasser al-Misnad. In June 2008, the Supreme Education Council (SEC) executive board created a steering committee to spearhead the efforts that will translate the vision into a development plan for the institution.
The committee has 10 very experienced members drawn from diverse constituencies from the educational and world of work sectors of Qatar.
Chairing the committee is Qatar Universitys former president Prof Ibrahim Saleh al-Naimi. J P Das serves as the educational consultant and provides support through and the Community College Project Office.
The institution is being developed along the lines of the US Community College model and will offer courses of studies leading to associates degrees in several fields.
A salient feature is the option that the graduates have of transferring credits earned to complete Bachelors degrees in their chosen field/major in universities.

I see the usual problem here. Nowhere in the particulars about the two Americans is whether they have any knowledge or experience with the educational systems of the Middle East.

sigh...

Hopefully it was just overlooked by the reporter. The Community College system works very well for the US market and fills an important educational need. It could do so in the Gulf too, but I can see the need for some tweaks... and a reality check.

Hmmm...anybody notice that the programs to be offered at this new American community college are ALREADY offered at CNA-Q? Where was the president of CNA-Q when discussions were taking place to find an institution to offer these programs? Perhaps a subtle reminder that CNA-Q offers these programs, has been for 6-7 years and is already in place?

Total incompetence on CNA-Q management. You have to seize these opportunities.

What will happen to CNA-Q? Will the wayside? Queen Latifa is not doing much, perhaps she'll take over the American college.

I bet you one thing - the salaries and benefits packages will be MUCH better than those offered by CNA-Q. They seem to want the AMerican system - watchout CNA-Q, you could be on the way out. I hear they still haven't signed an extension - their contract expires in 2011 just in time for the American College to take over the buildings!

Rock on! You got it and it is not a prediction. CNA-Q staff will be packing to Canada for deer hunting next June 2011 and their best American friends will be moving in.

Originally, I did not want to give a bad example, but instead of seal hunting as it was mentioned, I'd prefer ' WHALE WATCHING Laughing '

Dunno if my point is clear??????

Hope this helps

Boy chanchanhae can you put anymore stereotypes into your postings. You obviously have never been east of Montreal (if that far east) from what you post.

Most Atlantic Canadians would just roll their eyes over your meanderings.

Thats why we call people like you CFAs

What's a hoser? Sorry, not on my vocab list. So how do you apply to these colleges? What are they called? Are they going to employ mainly Americans? Does anyone have any more information?
