Hello,
I will be moving to BA on September 10 and have already started the job hunt from here in Toronto. Just wondering what institutes to are the best and which are the worst? Please let me know.

Hello, Franco,

As a general rule of thumb, all institutes (at least the ones in Buenos Aires that I have made the mistake of working for) are teacher pimps and nothing more.

The pay is insulting (they make a huge profit off your services while you are making a fraction of what they charge their students). Moreover, the hours are erratic, there is no chance for visa sponsorship, and in my experience, if the students dont show up, you dont get paid. Its pretty rotten.

To avoid getting a job that will turn you into an indentured servant, I would definitely advise sticking to freelance work. This way, apart from the autonomy, you can create your own schedule to be as full as you would like (there is, in actuality, a lot of work to be had as an EFL teacher if you have the right credentials, and keep in mind that word of mouth among students exists, and it is invaluable), and if you are personally not compatible with a student, you have the ability to back out of the situation, as opposed to when you are forced to teach them no matter how bad the situation, like with an institute or school. Also, you can set your own prices, and you keep 100% of your profits. No muss, no fuss. No middleman involved.

Just my two cents. Good luck! Smile

Thanks Violeta,

I feel sometimes it is discouraging to ask these questions because I get a lot of disparaging advice. However, I hope to teach at an language institute if only part-time. Luckily I have a place to stay when I arrive which is helpful and I don't have to worry about paying rent -- for now.

Upon arriving I would hope to be employed and then network enough so that I can tutor privately.

I know that BA is not the greatest place in terms of employment, but it is where I hope to live for now, and as long as I have a job, I will be happy. I know it will not be perfect, but for me, it's part of the adventure.

Thank you.
Franco
