I have an ARC so I'm paying income taxes in Taiwan, so how do I prove this to the govn't back home in Canada so they dont try to charge me for income taxes when I return? Do I have to declare the money I made?

I assume that you would take a copy of your tax withholding statements that your employer gives you (the yellow piece of paper), and a copy of the return that you lodged with the tax office here showing your total earnings minus deductions and the amount of tax that you have already paid.

My understanding is that if your tax rate back home is higher than your tax rate here then you need to pay your government the difference. This is very unfair in my opinion. If you are not living there, and not using the public services that taxes go towards paying, then why should you be paying taxes to support these. Of course when you return home and start working there, they will start taxing you again which is fair.

I think most people declare a certain amount of income back home, but keep under or near the minimum withholding amount so as to be able to lodge a return without having to pay any tax. This avoids your name being popping up on their watch lists for not having lodged a return in a specific year or years in the past.

You can always apply to become a non-resident.

True, that's certainly a possibility.

I was of the understanding (although I never actually confirmed this) that if you filed a tax return as being non-resident for a year or more, then you would lose your medical aide card and other entitlements. On your return you would then need to go through the process of reapplying. Is this true does anyone know?
