We felt the earthquake here in mid-Marche. A few long tremors then aftershocks all night. House shook, but fortunately no damage. My heart goes out to those in Aquila province - the TV channels have been doing rolling coverage all day and the images are frightening.
To be honest, though, pretty much the whole of Italy is seismic. It's not something you even really think about when choosing an area. The geologists do warn people when there's extra activity, but even they get it wrong. You can't predict quakes is the general consensus, but earthquake preparedness is something they teach in primary schools - at least in this area.
The thing that got me was all the footage of the supposedly seismically-built houses with their exposed walls of shoddy bricks and plaster. Scandalous. |
