I'm going to France in a few months to go job hunting. I'll be on a vacation visa essentially when I go there, but what I'm wondering is will they let you in without a return ticket? I don't know how long I'm going to be there (obviously no longer than 3 months), so I want to know if they require a return ticket when I arrive.

I'll be buying one as soon as I snag a job, but I don't want to leave too late, or too soon and pay a huge fee to have the date's changed.

Anyone ever try this before?

The one time I flew to France on a one-way ticket, they did ask at LAX about the return. I told them that I had an onward ticket to another country (which was true), but they didn't ask to see it. There is a chance that you will be questioned. Unless there is a major price difference, why not buy a round-trip ticket and toss the return if need be? Or, one that allows date changes for a nominal fee?

I, an American, fly from France, where I live, to the US a couple of times a year. Obviously, when I'm flying back to France on the return leg of the round trip I no longer have a ticket back out of the country. Once or twice, when checking in with the airline in the US, I have been asked why I don't have a ticket back--I simply reply that I live in France, and that's that. Same as Nmarie, in other words.

I've never been asked for a ticket out of the country by French customs and immigration. If I were, I'd just show my "titre de sjour."

That's right, Luder - but, we're now residents of France. I believe that the OP meant flying to France on a one-way ticket before having a residence visa.
