Things are far from well at Community College of Qatar, and it’s mostly because of one person. The chair of the English Language Centre, (MOD edit) foul-tempered American woman, has devastated morale in the year she’s been in charge. She has a small circle of favourites and lavishly rewards these few highly unqualified people, and treats everyone else with extreme rudeness. If she happens not to like you, you’ll face constant harassment. She generated so many complaints last year that she was very nearly fired over the summer, but managed to hang on by dint of wasta. Needless to say, the department’s a simmering cauldron of frustration and resentment. If she goes and a competent person takes over, it might be worthwhile to apply here. Till then, avoid the place at all costs.

The SEC is currently reviewing the roles of CCQ, QU and CNAQ in Doha with a view to reducing duplication of services (especially with the colleges) and enhancing a symbiotic relationship between the 3.

Of course this is partially a financial decision but could improve services to the students who aren't really Education City university material

One of the wonders for males teaching in Saudi is that there is ZERO chance of having a female boss or female colleagues ! Long live gender segregation !

Things have gone very quiet on a renewal of the CNA - State of Qatar contract. There have been visits from various campuses (QU and CCQ) to have a look around at the facilities at CNAQ. There have been visits from CNA senior management but they visit without announcement and without any overt interaction with staff/faculty here. That's been the MO for 4 years now.

All of this is not necessarily a bad thing. The SEC has taken more direct control in the Fall of 2014 and of course are looking to get a return on their investment by removing duplicate services/programs in future. That's only good sense.

Morale overall amongst current faculty can be low on various fronts. Having to reapply and interview for a job one has held for 6+ years and over 2 - 3 contracts is difficult for some to comprehend. Of course, current faculty are well paid in comparison with salary scales at QU and CCQ but if the contract between the Canadian campus is not renewed, that may change. If pay scales did change in the next 2 or 3 years on the negative side, that would probably mean many Canadians now on staff would leave.

The impact on the quality of education at the college would be interesting. Who knows if it would be negative, it could be positive if hiring is done judiciously and carefully.

Time will tell. In the meantime, it is still a very convenient point of departure for travellers. Of course, we also have our housing (which has been improved immeasurably for some over the past few months) and health and tickets.

Another ongoing problem at CCQ is housing. Most people are housed in reasonably large and well equipped flats, with on-site pool and gym, in Al Maha towers, but about 25% have been placed in small, poorly furnished and inconveniently located flats in the Bin Omran area. No pool, no gym, no outside area at all, just narrow, dirty, dangerous streets. The word "slum" has been used by some, and based on my visits there I can't disagree.

To make matters worse, in September newly hired single people were put into vacant flats in Al Maha, but couples and families who'd been hoping to escape were kept in their pathetically inadequate places in Bin Omran. Unfair in the extreme.

So, anyone at TESOL Arabia this weekend who is looking for work at CCQ, pay NO attention to the blowhard Dean, Dr. Blahblahblah. The person to listen to is the woman ELC Chair. She knows what she is talking about.

There are a small handful of ELC “instructors” who are not qualified, lazy, and simply should not be in the field of education. They sit and complain and watch the rest of us work hard to support our students. They would cause misery wherever they went.

It appears as though you may be one of them.

And it appears you may be one of the Chair's lapdogs (or the Chair herself).

Your argument: 'Hail Cat doesn't like the ELC Chair's management, so Hail Cat must be lazy and unqualified'.

Would you give this reasoning an A? I hope your responsibilities don't include teaching the persuasive essay.
