I know that it's cropped up before, but just how justified is Russia's dangerous reputation? I'm considering going to Russia this year and was quite looking forward to it, but it seems that nearly everyone I mention it to has a horror story or a friend-of-a-friend story about getting robbed / attacked / lynched or whatever. Is it all hype? How does it compare to other countries? If so, are the southern and eastern provinces any better or worse that St.Petersburgh or Moscow?
Any comments would be much appreciated. |

Many people outside the USA have a picture of that society as dangerous, violent and gun-obsessed.
Would you suggest that we do not visit the USA for that reason ? |

For what it is worth, I lived in Russia and Ukraine for about 18 months altogether and I was never the victim of a crime. Moscow is certainly no more dangerous than any major metro area in the USA. Likewise, you are probably safer in smaller towns of the hinterland than in Moscow and St. Petersburg. |

Thanks.
I suspected as much. It's just that it made me wonder. It's not generally a subject that crops up when discussing other couintries. |
