Hi,

I live in Rome and am retired. I am considering taking up teaching English in Rome.

My questions are the following:

What qualifications should I obtain to be able to teach?
How difficult is it to get my first job?
Typically working for a school how much can I earn monthly?

Probably lots more questions but these are the first that come to mind.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Kerry

I'm no longer in Rome, so don't have up to date info on pay.

I'd start by contacting some of the schools and asking them your questions. Many places are going to insist on a tefl qualification like a CELTA, and there are also places in Rome you can do this.

Pay will fluctuate depending on who / where you teach, but not many schools will offer year-round contracts. Expect work from September - mid July at latest, but time off around Easter, Christmas, and all the public holidays.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Very Happy . On Tuesday I have the test for admission to the CELTA test at International House, Viale Manzoni. I'll turn the questions around to them.

Any ideas about what the written test consist of?

admissions test? I figure as long as your cheque doesn't bounce, you're in.

No, there's an actual admissions test for CELTA, as there is for other reputable programmes. I myself have turned away a few candidates who gave me reason to think that their chances of passing were small. These were candidates with very non-standard accents, for example, or those who made consistent grammatical errors in their speech or writing.

Better to turn them away than to fail them. There are lots of other candidates for the places.

Put it this way your disposable income for the year after you have paid rent and bills etc. will not be more than the cost of the CELTA.
