I'm currently teaching in my second year in Germany, and a paying into the German state Rentenversicherung system, because as a freelancer with no employees I cannot yet choose the private pension scheme.

I have heard various rumours, however, that there are ways of getting out of this, and that, being British, I may have the option to pay into the UK system instead, e.g. if I am a homeowner there.

I'm currently paying 250 euros for a system which is reputed to pay nothing back by the time I get to retirement age, and the fee is going up to 500 euros in September so I'd like to get this sorted now.

If anyone has any advice I'd be really grateful!

Thanks!

Can I ask where you heard about the fee increase?

You can pay half the normal rate for 2 years as a freelancer on a low income... after that it's normal rate: 500 euros minimum...
