Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if anyone can give me some information on teaching English in Australia in the new year 2011. Can anyone recommend a good school that takes applications from the UK?
My background: CELTA qualified, a few months teaching experience here in the UK. By the time I get to Oz I will have had five months teaching experience in Asia. Oh, and i have a university degree too
Am I likely to find work easily at that time of year if I just turn up? I'm looking to settle in the Manly area of Sydney first of all. Sun, sea and sand
Any help or insights would be very gratefully received! |

That sounds perfectly feasible, as long as you have the right to work in Australia. The easiest way for you to do so would be to apply for a working holiday visa, as long as you're under 31, a British passport holder and ordinarily resident in the UK - check Aus Immigration website for details. A working holiday visa gives you the right to work for a year, though only a max of three months per employer .. but do double check the details - I'm more familiar with the scheme in NZ. If you're over 30, you won't be able to apply and I don't see any way of you working in Australia.
If you do have the right to work, it ought to be possible for you to pick up some teaching in Sydney. There are a few schools in Manly, including a large branch of International House .. look them up on the web .. you might also get some info from the IH World HQ in Covent Garden. Other schools in Australia can be found through the English Australia website.

Manly is a great place to live with a healthy lifestyle and chilled atmosphere. I'd live just outside of there to save money on rent however. Maybe Dee Why? Rents are ridiculous in Manly in Jan. Two colleges just closed in the Manly area (inc. Geos) but there are still a few more.
I know that SEA English college likes to hire Brits on WHVisas. International House likes to teachers with limited experience because they are on a lower pay scale and ACE likes people with a CELTA . Jan is generally a good time to get hired but they often don't know the student numbers until a week into it. Contact them beforehand.
I think your plan is a feasible one. It just depends on the right timing for the job. You can always commute to North Sydney or Sydney for a job if your heart is set on living in Manly. |

I have similar plans to the OP but I'm going to look for work in Perth. I'm CELTA qualified and have a BA but have no teaching experience as I passed my CELTA last week.
Prospects on finding work January 2011 on a working holiday visa? Good, medium, fair?
This site seems to be a bit doom and gloom about the ESL market in Oz at present.
Cheers in advance. |
