aha! So I guess I know where you're headed.
Turkey not all that great to teach in? I was thinking of doing the opposite. |

holy smokes, thats bad.....I believe a good 75% of it, too. and thats bad, as I too was thinking of heading there soon.
this is looking worrisome. better stick to se asia, as the west (I incl. Turkey there now sort of) is about to really bite the big one, from n america all the way to turkey. |

Admittedly, I never worked for ET or Berlitz in Turkey, but I did work at a university and a language school in Ankara.
Gulam2 is obviously entitled to his opinion about Turkey, but I had a totally different experience, which might encourage others to apply to teach in Turkey.
My salary was 5 times what the average Turk earned, and my working hours were either 8am - 1pm or 1pm - 6pm (two different shifts at university). At language school it was Mon-Fri 5pm - 10pm., then 1pm - 6pm at weekends.
My accommodation was excellent - a spanking new apartment, with all mod cons. My students were hard-working and respectful.
I had no experience of theft, and found the people to be extremely kind and hospitable. Overall, my job satisfaction was wonderful - in 25 years of EFL/EAP teaching, I have never had such motivated, kind, lively students. I guess it depends who you work for! |

I'll second Dedicated. ET and Berlitz are crooks, but the other negative comments on this thread about Turkish people and students are not representative at all. |

Oh, I know what ET and Berlitz are like to be involved with. They are very dishonest with customers, staff and teachers. They are part of a bad lot (English conversation school mills), and not too far off from what Geos and NOVA were like.
But if you have a sheitty job that you have to go to every day, then it makes the experience a terrible one.
Having a job you like can really make the experience, so that may explain the disparity in opinions described above. |
