What's the story here? I hear that Google has pulled out of China, but when I, here in China, type in "www.google.com", the same site comes up as always. Then I hear that the site actually takes you to the Hong Kong site, but when I type in "www.google.com", there is no re-direction to Hong Kong. How can people say that Google has pulled out of China when the site comes up the same as it has for 2 years running?

Try googling the news. There have been a number of articles lately about Google and China coming to an agreement. I must admit that I didn't read any of them.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- "Google said Friday that it has renewed its license with the Chinese government to continue operating in that country, ending a standoff over censorship.

"We are very pleased that the government has renewed our [Internet content provider] license and we look forward to continuing to provide Web search and local products to our users in China," said Google on its blog.
Google did not make any concessions regarding censorship, Tokyo-based Google spokeswoman Jessica Powell said.

"I don't think we gave anything up," she said. "We asked the government to renew our license to make some products that don't require any censorship. We are going to continue to offer uncensored Web search with google.com.hk."

Users Say Google Is Not Blocked In China, Google Says Otherwise

"According to Google�s Mainland China service availability page it looks like Google Web Search, Google Images and Google News are down in China, again. In fact, if you parse the chart it looks like just about the only thing still up is Gmail.

However reports on Twitter say otherwise, as many users claim that the service is working just fine. We also tested Google.com.cn on Webpulse and received a big thumbs up in terms of availability.

Google search was similarly blocked in China last January, when the search giant pulled out of the country reportedly over its censorship policy. The service was reinstated earlier his month and it appeared that the relationship between the two behemoths had been mended.

According to Reuters, a Google spokesperson had no information as to whether the Chinese government or a third party was responsible for the block, perhaps because there actually is isn�t one ?

Chad Catacchio over at The Next Web writes that a server crash might actually responsible for the false alarm. Twitter user @nuibi backs up this theory.

We have contacted Google for official comment and will keep you posted if we have updates."

Google cannot pull out of China, unless they can turn off China's internet connection. Google simply closed google.cn. You can go to google.com in any country, as long as it is not blocked.

The point is that all google.cn things are transferred to google.com.hk...not a big deal to most, as English speakers usually use google.com anyway.
