There is demand for NES teachers ad more people flooding in to do the EFL thing.

The need is greater in the rural areas, but will these volunteers be able to live in rural areas? They will need to select carefully, if that's possible.

I suspect the Peace Corps will focus on those EFL learners who are most underserved due to poverty and/or lack of access to language classes rather than the demographic most expat EFL language school teachers teach. Plus, the Corps will definitely be providing pre and in-service teacher training to VN teachers.

Peace Corps has been in existence for more than 50 years, placing thousands of Volunteers in countries around the world in very rural and remote areas. This shouldn't be a problem for them.

Oh! The talk/anticipation of Peace Corps entering Vietnam has been around for a long while and now it is all finally coming to fruition.

First Thailand, then Cambodia (2007), soon Myanmar (2017), and now Vietnam--I wonder when/if Peace Corps will enter Laos.

The program will focus on English-language education for the Vietnamese people in two cities: Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, according to the Associated Press. It is expected to expand to more cities from there.

Did anyone actually read the article? There is no mention of teaching in rural areas unless you call Hanoi and HCMC as "the sticks".

One would expect it would be for disadvantaged folks.

I don't think it will have a huge impact on pay/conditions for paid teachers.

These are already getting worse year on year due to the poor state of the world economy and the total lack of regulation enforcement.

These peace corps volunteers will mostly be sent to areas that have no market for teachers/schools. Remote, rural areas and if in the cities they will be running programs for kids who cannot otherwise afford to study English.

As such I can't seen any impact and overall it's a good thing.

Most teachers nowadays seem only to be teaching conversation or pronunciation, and since they do not need to teach reading comprehension, their abilities in critically reading atrophy.

I once did a computation a while back that to fill the government's promise to give every government school student one period a week of instruction with a native English speaker would require 8000 teachers working 25 hour weeks. This is above any employment at private centers. I doubt that the Peace Corps will have a noticeable impact. It still is a little puzzling why they would be posted in Hanoi and HCMC instead of the countryside, but it is possible that the authors just got it wrong.

Nope, they're in the cities:

Quote:
SECRETARY KERRY: "As everybody knows, more than half the population of Vietnam was not alive when the war between the United States and Vietnam took place. For 20 years now, we have had what we call a normal relationship. But this is normal, having the Peace Corps, being able to move forward, having young Americans come here – not always young – to be able to teach English in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City is the next step forward in building the relationship between the United States and Vietnam. And I thank all those who have worked hard to make this happen." Source: http://www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2016/05/257655.htm

Keep in mind they need to get their main offices/operations established first in these cities since the organization is new to Vietnam.

Also:
Quote:
MS HESSLER-RADELETT (Peace Corps Director): "The opening of a Peace Corps program in Vietnam further strengthens and deepens our relationship between the two countries and people-to-people engagement. Peace Corps volunteers will assist Vietnamese teachers and students in English education, and they will learn the language, rich traditions, culture, and history of this great nation." Indeed, it may be a few years between the public announcement of the government agreement and the arrival of the first group of Peace Corps Trainees.

For instance, the public announcement of the government agreement for Myanmar was made in November, 2014 and it is expected that the first group of Volunteers will arrive in February, 2017. Peace Corps is accepting applications for this first group of Myanmar Volunteers at this very moment.

Will it make an impact on the state of English language teaching and learning in Vietnam? Perhaps a small one. Will it have an impact on the situation for other foreign English teachers in Vietnam? Perhaps, but maybe not.

While I don't presume Peace Corps Volunteers will be stationed be in the Vietnamese countryside, I do presume they will ultimately end up in smaller cities at high schools and colleges.
