I heard the only way you can get an offer in Prague is to get your TEFL certificate there. Is there any hope for a non-EU citizen?

It's possible for non EU teachers to get work permits, but you need a school to want you enough to help you jump through the hoops. That's another reason it's helpful to get certified in the city, if at all possible.

Timing is also really important. Contracts are typically Sept-June and you need to be up for a job search end August first of Sept (sooner all the schools will be firmly on holiday, as are most Europeans).

You could send around some introductory emails with your CV (resume) attached in advance, but don't be surprised if you hear nothing - you really have to be in the city to get a hearing, though it doesn't hurt to introduce yourself via email in advance.

just to clarify, the market's really changed in the last year or two. last year, no problem taking on Americans and Aussies. but these days, there are so many people struggling in the UK and Ireland that they are taking TEFL certs and then making themselves available.

so the supply has changed and when you're presented with two comparable teachers, but one of them needs a shitload more admin work than the other, who you gonna choose?

Its definitely a big advantage to have your TEFL certification

As an American the best thing would be to get a zivnostensky list. You'll need help from a school to get one, but once you do it makes working in the country and changing employers a lot easier.
