Just woke to some 'overnight news' about the protests over Saudi's execution of the Shi'ite cleric-- saw images of very angry Iranians attacking Saudi embassy-- and Iranian diplomats being sent out of Saudi. Guess I'd just like to be reassured that all is well and will continue to be well in the Switzerland of the Middle East?
I really wish they weren't literally sitting right in the middle of all that. Would love to detach Oman from the peninsula and float them around the world into the Pacific- re-attach them to Baja CA. Not that it's actually a safe harbor over here either... |

I also hope events in the Middle East don't affect Oman's peaceful nature. Oman and the Sultan have been very careful to try their best to stay out of the wars, and for example be a peace broker with Iran. So I am positive that Oman can avoid the worst. I was discussing events in the region with my family today, and some were saying Saudi Arabia will collapse within 5 years. Personally I think Saudi Arabia could face major turmoil in 2 decades or so. Clearly a civil war in Saudi Arabia would have a very major impact on the other gulf states. Of course, I think the West would do their best to protect Qatar, The UAE and Oman from this. Anyway history is a funny thing. How many of us woke up to news of the Berlin Wall being torn down, and thought the East German communist regime would collapse so quickly ? |

Conflict to Oman's South in Yemen......neighbor to the West [Saudi Arabia]on verge of conflict with Iran, neighbor to the North[UAE] has severed diplomatic ties with Iran.....threat of sectarian conflict across the region........I'm keeping a case semi-packed just in case things go pear-shaped in a major way! But then, I always have kept a case semi-packed since I arrived... |

Personally, I'm not bothered about my personal safety in regards to this and I live less than two hundred clicks from the Yemeni border. Oman seems pretty adept at not getting sucked into these sort of things and rightly so. Besides, this is the Middle East and I can't remember a time in my lifetime when there wasn't some political crisis, war, revolution or what have you going on . |

Not quite accurate as they didn't "sever ties" but downgraded its relationship... meaning instead of an ambassador, the Iran embassy will be led by a lower level diplomat.
