I've been seeking information on this (Kabul teaching opportunities) for about a month now with no luck. Did searches but got very little info. Can anyone fill me in?

Kabul...now there's one that doesn't come up here often!
http://unjobs.org/
Saw a couple of listings there...I don't think this is actually the UN listing them though despite the name. |

There's a war going on - probably has some impact on recruitment ...! |

If you are American, check with the Defense Language Institute English Language Center for term appointment positions, they recruit on USAJobs.gov. The pay works out to about $100k a year for teaching the Afghan military on one of the NATO bases. The British Council is also setting up shop and may have some similar positions.
Life on the bases is secure (in the rear with the gear) but dull. It is a good way to pile up some cash and Afghan students are a very enthusiastic and respectful bunch. The students are probably the best thing about the whole experience.
I would not advise working anywhere outside the bases. Even my Afghan students and friends say that it would not be safe for a foreigner to do that. |

Thanks all,
I'm Canadian. Would I go through the US companies or British ones?

I'd try the US. The British Council (or any British op) won't pay anything like as much. |

I'm interested in this too; not keen on going through a Canadian agency though because you need perfect credentials and they always want you to volunteer. There must be a private recruiter somewhere. |

If that job exists, they're not currently hiring.
I wonder what the qualifications are though. Probably more than most ESL teachers.

Well, the job does certainly exist. I just returned from spending a year working for the DLI over there. They don't have the job currently on usajobs.gov where they recruit exclusively. They have been hiring off and on for several years for positions teaching in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Over the course of the year they have the ad posted half the time. Keep checking the website and they will post again. With the aim of transitioning to an Afghan takeover of all facets of training there will be more need for additional teachers.
DLI prefers master's degrees but definitely will hire those with bachelor's degrees provided they have ESL experience. |
