I am planning to visit Myanmar next month. I was wondering about money. Do I need to bring brand new US dollars? Where should I exchange money? Also, are their any ATMs available in the major cities for US and/or China debit cards?

Pick up a copy of the latest edition of Lonely Planet's guide to Myanmar.

I was there three years ago (Nov 2011) and, at that time, they would only change crisp unfolded U.S. bills of certain denominations ($20s and $50s, I believe) from a limited range of years. At that time, ATMs and U.S. credit/debit cards were not an option. That being said, things are changing all the time over there. Likewise, Chinese currency/cards could be a whole different story. You might try doing a Google or Facebook search for discussion boards on traveling to Burma/Myanmar. Also, the Lonely Planet website has a traveler's discussion forum which might be of use.

Good luck, and please keep us posted on what you find out.

Thanks, esl_prof. I will check those sources. As you said, things have been changing quickly in the past couples years or so. In the meantime, if anyone has any updated information on banking or travel tips in general, please let me know.
