Hello All,

Can anyone tell me what kind of qualification a British university would be looking for in an EAP instructor?

Also, while I've seen some postings for presessional work (before the start of the school year) I haven't seen anything for full time work. Has anyone worked full time for a university? What sort of responsibilities do instructors have?

Thanks,

b-boy

Full time work is no doubt available but often a case of being known already, or being in the right place at the right time. For example I'm a (very) part-timer at an FE college at the moment and hopefully have a good chance for the full time post that has just come up.

For jobs try The Guardian or TES (Times Educational Supplement) as well as the usual places.

Qualifications - don't know minimum but the more the merrier I'd imagine. Responsibilities likely to include bureaucracy, pastoral, policy, fun meetings and the like....

Full-time teaching posts at UK universities are as scarce as rocking horse manure, I'm afraid. I'm fairly sure that my own university employs only one ESL professional full-time, with a number of other tutors employed occasionally on an hourly-paid basis. Hourly paid teaching in ESL of any variety is paid here at UK25.00ph (may vary between establishments). I believe they want for DELTA plus experience for EAP work. Hourly paid tutors probably work part-time for more than one establishment.

Permanent full-time university positions will probably entail teacher training as well so you would be looking at PhD plus either DELTA or lots of experience. Such posts are very secure with good terms and relaxed working conditions (but mediocre salary) and hence highly sought-after.

University postions in the UK are hard to get. Lots of competition, and most successful candidates will have at least a Master's and morel likely a Doctorate.
Lots of jobs are part-time.

Within UK universities there is still the feeling that learning and teaching foreignl anguages (inclusing EFL) is something that should be dome pre-university.
